AXIS OF SOLITUDE

INTERACTIVE INSTALLATION

Loneliness is not a single negative emotion; it has a wealth of layers. It can be tinged with pain, restlessness and helplessness, but at the same time it can be an opportunity for self-exploration, independent thinking and self-growth. Loneliness can be an emotional trauma as well as a spiritual peace. By creating an artworks about loneliness, materialize the complex emotion of loneliness, which is no longer an abstract emotion but a dynamic process that can be actually seen. We can reveal its different dimensions and meanings, gaze into loneliness, and alleviate it.

HAND DRAWING

The installation provides an enclosed space in which the red rope hangs and runs through as if wrapping the emotion of loneliness in the space. Viewers will visualize the weight and fluidity of loneliness in this enclosed space, experiencing the process of tension, release, and digestion of emotional states. The person in the space affects the movement of the red rope, expressing the interaction and connection between the state of loneliness and people. Loneliness is not absolutely closed, it changes, is perceived, and digested all the time in the interaction with people and the environment.

The white guaze is both transparent and hazy, creating a “seen but not seen” effect, an ambiguity that is very much in line with the state of loneliness, especially the emotional experience of social isolation and social alienation. It is vague, uncertain and elusive.

In Eastern cultures, red yarn are often associated with emotion, fate, and connection. The red yarn in the installation creates a connection with loneliness, showing the human desire for emotional connection and the complex psychology of having this connection severed or distorted in a state of loneliness. The process of withdrawing the red rope is both a release of loneliness and a reorganization.

When the audience enters this space, the motor operates, slowly winding up the red yarn, and the chaotic red yarn are then scattered, and reorganized.
