CLOCK
PROECTION INSTALLATION
XIAOJIE XIE

This project critically examines the intersection of art and sustainability by repurposing discarded materials, subverting the traditional notion of a clock as a purely functional object. Through the transformation of reclaimed metal into an artistic timepiece, it challenges conventional perceptions of waste and encourages reflection on consumer culture’s environmental impact. In terms of form, the medium is subverted by introducing a dynamic, kinetic element—the swinging metal frame. This movement adds vitality to the piece, contrasting with the static nature of traditional clocks and reinforcing themes of transformation and renewal. Digital processes play a crucial role, particularly in the projection of time information onto the metal surface. Projection mapping techniques will be utilized to ensure accurate and legible display of the hour, minute, and second hands, adapting seamlessly to the irregular contours of the material. For the critique presentation, installation will be arranged in a designated space that allows viewers to observe both movement and projection. Secure rigging of the metal frame will ensure smooth swinging while maintaining safety. Digital equipment, including projectors, will be strategically positioned for optimal visibility, with all wiring and technical components discreetly managed to minimize distraction and maintain focus on the artwork itself.
